iOS 27 on iPhone 15: full Apple Intelligence or not?

All four iPhone 15 models run iOS 27, but only the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max get Apple Intelligence. See why the A16 misses out, what you keep, and how to update.

Quick answer

It depends on the model. All four iPhone 15 phones run iOS 27, but only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max get Apple Intelligence, because they use the A17 Pro chip. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use the older A16 Bionic, so they get iOS 27 and its security updates without Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji or Clean Up.

Which iPhone 15 models get iOS 27?

All of them. iOS 27 runs on 33 iPhones, from the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation) up to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and no iPhone that ran iOS 26 was dropped. The iPhone 15 family is well inside that range. What splits it is Apple Intelligence, which needs an A17 Pro or newer.

ModelChipRAMiOS 27Apple Intelligence
iPhone 15A16 Bionic6GBYesNo
iPhone 15 PlusA16 Bionic6GBYesNo
iPhone 15 ProA17 Pro8GBYesYes
iPhone 15 Pro MaxA17 Pro8GBYesYes

This is the only iPhone generation where two models in the same family land on opposite sides of the Apple Intelligence line. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 families all miss out, and every iPhone 16 model qualifies. If you bought "an iPhone 15" assuming it was ready for Apple Intelligence, the model name matters more than the year.

How to check which iPhone 15 you have

  1. Open Settings › General › About.
  2. Read the Model Name line. It says iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.

If the word Pro is there, you are in the Apple Intelligence tier. If it is not, you are not. You can also tell by looking: the Pro models have three rear cameras and a brushed titanium frame, while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have two cameras and an aluminium frame. The Pro models also have the Action button where the mute switch used to be, although later standard iPhones gained one too, so the cameras are the more reliable tell. For other models, see how to check if your iPhone supports iOS 27.

What the iPhone 15 Pro gets on iOS 27

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are the oldest iPhones that run Apple Intelligence, so they get the full iOS 27 update plus the Apple Intelligence layer:

Apple Intelligence featureWhat it does
Writing ToolsProofread, rewrite or change the tone of text in Mail, Notes, Messages and other apps
Image PlaygroundCreate images from a description, on the device
GenmojiMake custom emoji from a description
Clean Up in PhotosRemove unwanted objects and people from photos
Mail summaries and Priority MessagesSummarize emails and threads and bring urgent ones to the top
Notification summariesCondense stacks of notifications into a short digest

Our WWDC 2026 coverage also places Apple's new conversational Siri on the Apple Intelligence side of the line, alongside the features above. If you want to try them, our guide to enabling Apple Intelligence on iPhone walks through the setup, which needs Wi-Fi and a few gigabytes for the model download.

What the standard iPhone 15 gets

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus get iOS 27 itself: the updated design and system apps, the new settings and every security fix Apple ships during the cycle. Additions announced at WWDC 2026, such as the system-wide slider for Liquid Glass transparency, are part of the base system. Apple marks which features need Apple Intelligence on its feature pages, so check there before counting on a specific one, and see our iOS 27 features list for the wider picture.

What the standard models do not get is anything sold under the Apple Intelligence name. Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji, Clean Up, Mail summaries, Priority Messages and notification summaries do not appear on an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, and that does not change with later updates.

Before WWDC, some coverage, including an earlier version of this page, expected the rebuilt Siri to reach every iOS 27 iPhone. Treat that as a pre-launch expectation. On an A16 iPhone, plan on Siri without the Apple Intelligence features.

Why Apple drew the line through the iPhone 15

The split goes back to a normal Apple product decision in 2023. That year the new A17 Pro went into the Pro models only, and the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus inherited the A16 Bionic from the iPhone 14 Pro. Apple Intelligence had not been announced yet.

When it was, Apple set the floor at the A17 Pro for two reasons:

  • The Neural Engine. Apple Intelligence runs generative models on the device, and the A17 Pro's Neural Engine is the oldest Apple chose to support for that work.
  • Memory. The models have to stay loaded while the rest of the system runs. The A17 Pro phones have 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have 6GB, which runs iOS 27 well but leaves too little room for the models.

So in practice the standard iPhone 15 shares its Apple Intelligence status with the iPhone 14 Pro, not with its own Pro siblings. There is no workaround: changing region, language or settings does not enable it.

Outside Apple Intelligence, the differences are the hardware you already own. The Pro's extra memory keeps more apps open in the background, and ProMotion makes scrolling and animations look smoother.

How iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 15

Both chips handle iOS 27's everyday work comfortably. The A17 Pro carries the extra load of Apple Intelligence, which it was designed for. The A16 has no Apple Intelligence models to keep in memory, so all of its 6GB goes to apps and the system.

Expect a day or two of extra battery use and warmth after any major update while the phone re-indexes photos and rebuilds caches in the background. That settles on its own. If the phone still feels slow or short on battery after that, check Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging. A worn battery affects everyday feel more than any software update, and our battery tips for iOS 27 cover the settings worth changing.

How to update an iPhone 15 to iOS 27

The current public release is iOS 27.0.1 (build 24A446), released on 28 September 2026. It installs over the air on all four models.

  1. Back up the iPhone to iCloud or to a computer.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and plug the phone into power.
  3. Open Settings › General › Software Update.
  4. Tap Update Now and enter your passcode.
  5. Leave the phone on the charger until it restarts on iOS 27.

On an iPhone 15 Pro, turn on Apple Intelligence afterwards in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri if it is not already on, and let the models download over Wi-Fi.

If you prefer a manual install, the IPSW pages for the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro list every build with its signing status, alongside the Plus and Pro Max pages in the IPSW library.

How to try the iOS 27 beta on iPhone 15

The beta track is iOS 27.2, and the newest build is beta 4 (24B5110a), released on 13 October 2026. It is free with any Apple Account, with no configuration profile or paid developer membership.

  1. Archive a backup on a Mac or PC so a newer backup cannot overwrite it.
  2. For the public beta, enroll at beta.apple.com. For the developer beta, sign in once in the free Apple Developer app.
  3. Open Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates.
  4. Choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta.
  5. Go back one screen and install the beta when it appears.

Going back is possible while Apple signs the older build. Right now that is iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82), restored from a Mac or PC, which erases the phone. To stay on the beta's current build without erasing anything, just switch Beta Updates off: the phone moves to the next public release with a higher version number.

Should you upgrade from the standard iPhone 15?

This question only applies to iPhone 15 and 15 Plus owners. The Pro models already have everything.

Keep your iPhone 15 if you mainly message, call, take photos, browse and use apps, and you have not missed AI writing or image tools. It is fully supported on iOS 27 and runs it well.

Consider upgrading if Apple Intelligence sounds useful day to day: you write a lot, you would use Image Playground or Genmoji, or you want Mail summaries and Priority Messages. The standard iPhone 15 will not gain those features. The lowest-cost route is a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro. New, the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e are both on the supported list.

What to do next

If you are staying with your iPhone 15, update to iOS 27.0.1 and you have everything your model supports. If you are weighing a newer phone, the full iOS 27 supported devices list shows which models include Apple Intelligence.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone 15 get Apple Intelligence on iOS 27?

Only the Pro models do. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the A17 Pro chip, which is the minimum Apple sets for Apple Intelligence, so they get the full set. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic and do not get Apple Intelligence at all. All four models still install iOS 27 and receive its security updates.

Can every iPhone 15 update to iOS 27?

Yes. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are all on Apple's list of 33 iPhones that run iOS 27. The current public release is iOS 27.0.1 (build 24A446), released on 28 September 2026, and it installs from Settings › General › Software Update. The only difference between the models is Apple Intelligence.

Why doesn't the standard iPhone 15 support Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence runs language models on the phone itself, and Apple drew the hardware line at the A17 Pro chip with 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic, the chip from the iPhone 14 Pro, with 6GB of RAM. That is plenty for iOS 27 itself but below the floor for Apple Intelligence. No setting, region change or update adds it.

How can I tell if my iPhone 15 is a Pro model?

Open Settings › General › About and read the Model Name line. If it says iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, you have the A17 Pro and Apple Intelligence. If it says iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus, you do not. On the phone itself, the Pro models have three rear cameras and a titanium frame, while the standard models have two cameras and an aluminium frame.

Can I install the iOS 27 beta on an iPhone 15?

Yes, on all four models. The beta is free with any Apple Account. Open Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates, choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta, go back and install. The latest build is iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a) from 13 October 2026. Archive a computer backup first, because a beta backup will not restore onto an older iOS version.

What is the cheapest iPhone with Apple Intelligence?

Any iPhone with an A17 Pro chip or newer qualifies, so on the used market a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro is usually the entry point. New, the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e are on the supported list too. The full list is iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Avoid the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus if Apple Intelligence is the reason you are buying.

How long will the iPhone 15 get updates?

Apple does not publish end-of-support dates, so any year is a guess. History is encouraging: in 2026 the iPhone 11 from 2019 still runs iOS 27, and Apple dropped no iPhone this year. The iPhone 15 is four years newer than the iPhone 11. Expect both the standard and Pro models to keep getting iOS updates for several more years, with the Pro models also picking up new Apple Intelligence features.
