Quick answer
To improve battery life on the iOS 27 beta, give your iPhone two to three days after each install to finish indexing, then check Settings › Battery for apps with heavy background activity. Limit Background App Refresh and Location Services, reduce motion and transparency, lower brightness, and restart every few days. If drain persists, reset settings or leave the beta.
Why the iOS 27 beta drains the battery
Beta software uses more power than a public release for a few overlapping reasons, and only some of them are under your control.
- Background indexing. After each install, the iPhone re-indexes your photo library and Spotlight and re-syncs iCloud data. This is temporary.
- Diagnostic logging. Beta builds log more activity so Apple can investigate bugs, and that work costs power.
- Unfinished tuning. Efficiency work tends to land late in a release cycle, so early builds of a point release can be less refined.
- Apple Intelligence downloads. On models that support it, on-device models can download and update in the background after an install.
- Visual effects. Liquid Glass translucency and animation add graphics work.
The current build is iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a), released on 13 October 2026. Each new beta restarts the indexing step, so expect a short dip after every update, not just the first one.
How to find what is draining your battery
Check the battery screen before changing anything. A single misbehaving app often accounts for most of the drain.
- Open
Settings › Battery. - Wait for the graph to load; it can take a moment on a beta.
- Switch between the last 24 hours and the last 10 days.
- Scroll to the list of apps and tap Show Activity to see on-screen time against background time.
- Look for apps with long background activity that do not need it.
Context matters. Hours of background activity from a game points to a bug. The same figure from a messaging or navigation app may be normal. If Home & Lock Screen is high, a widget or animated wallpaper may be the cause; remove widgets one at a time to find it.
The 10 tips
1. Wait two to three days after installing
This one needs no effort and makes the biggest difference. Indexing and iCloud syncing run hardest in the first day or two, and using the phone heavily during that time only drains it faster. Install betas in the evening, leave the iPhone on charge and on Wi-Fi overnight, and judge battery life after a few days rather than a few hours.
2. Limit Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh lets apps update when you are not using them, and some apps refresh far more often than they should on beta software.
- Open
Settings › General › Background App Refresh. - Tap Background App Refresh and choose Off or Wi-Fi.
- Or leave it on and switch it off for individual apps in the list below.
Keep it on for messaging apps you rely on and turn it off for the rest.
3. Audit Location Services
GPS is one of the heavier users of power on any iPhone, and an app with a bug can ask for your location far more often than it needs to.
- Open
Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. - Go through each app and choose While Using the App or Never unless it truly needs Always.
- Turn off Precise Location for apps that only need a rough area, such as weather.
- Scroll to System Services and switch off items you do not use.
4. Reduce motion and transparency
Liquid Glass uses translucency, blur and animation. Turning these down cuts the graphics work and keeps the interface readable.
- Open
Settings › Accessibility › Motionand turn on Reduce Motion. - Go back to
Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Sizeand turn on Reduce Transparency.
Reduce Motion replaces zoom and parallax effects with simple fades. Reduce Transparency swaps blurred backgrounds for solid ones. Both are easy to turn off again later.
5. Review Apple Intelligence settings
On iPhones with Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and newer), on-device models need processing time and storage. You do not need to switch everything off, but you can scale back what you are not testing.
- Open
Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri. - Review which features are on and switch off the ones you do not use.
- Check
Settings › General › iPhone Storageafter an install. If Apple Intelligence models are still downloading, expect higher drain until they finish.
6. Lower brightness and use Dark Mode
The display uses more power than anything else on the phone. On OLED iPhones, Dark Mode saves power because black pixels are switched off. On LCD models (iPhone 11 and iPhone SE) it helps less, but lower brightness still matters.
- Open
Settings › Display & Brightness. - Choose Dark, or set it to change automatically.
- Lower the brightness slider if auto-brightness seems to keep the screen brighter than you need.
- Set
Auto-Lockto 30 seconds or 1 minute.
7. Cut down notifications
Each notification can light the screen and wake the radio. One costs little, but dozens an hour add up.
- Open
Settings › Notifications › Scheduled Summary. - Turn it on and choose delivery times.
- Add non-urgent apps to the summary.
- Turn off notifications entirely for apps you never act on.
A Focus that silences most apps does the same job when you need to save power for a few hours.
8. Adjust the Always-On display
Supported models, starting with the iPhone 14 Pro, can keep the Lock Screen dimly lit. The cost is normally small, but beta rendering bugs can make it larger.
- Open
Settings › Display & Brightness › Always On Display. - Turn it off, or keep it and switch off Show Wallpaper and Show Notifications for a darker screen that still shows the time.
9. Use Low Power Mode when you need it
Low Power Mode reduces background activity until you next charge. Turn it on in Settings › Battery › Low Power Mode or add it to Control Center. Switch it off again when you want to test features normally, because it changes how the phone behaves.
10. Restart every few days
A restart clears stuck processes and memory problems that build up on beta software. If the phone runs warm for no clear reason or the battery suddenly drops faster, restart first.
- Press and hold the side button and either volume button.
- Drag the power-off slider.
- Wait about 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
You can also use Settings › General › Shut Down. If the phone is frozen and will not respond, follow the steps to force restart your iPhone instead.

Is it the beta or the battery?
A beta can make the battery drain faster, but it cannot reduce the battery's capacity. If battery life has been getting worse over months, and not just since you installed the beta, check Settings › Battery › Battery Health. A Maximum Capacity below 80 percent points to a worn battery. Our guide on how to check battery health explains what each reading means. If the iPhone charges slowly or stops charging, work through the iPhone charging fix guide.
When nothing works
Reset All Settings
Go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. This keeps your data but resets Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper and other preferences. It can fix drain caused by a corrupted setting carried over from an earlier build.
Report it and wait for the next build
Some builds simply have a power bug. File a report in the Feedback Assistant app with a description of when the drain happens; our guide to reporting bugs in the iOS 27 beta shows what to include. iOS 27.2 betas have arrived every one to two weeks so far, and the iOS 27 known issues page tracks problems other testers are seeing.
Leave the beta
If the phone is unusable, you have two ways out. Turning off Beta Updates keeps your current build and data, and the iPhone moves to the next public release with a higher version number. For an immediate return, restore iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82), which Apple is signing for iPhones, from Finder or the Apple Devices app. That erases the iPhone, and a backup made on the beta cannot be restored onto the older version, so you need a pre-beta backup. The guide to downgrading from the iOS 27 beta walks through it.
What to do next
Start with the battery screen and tips 1 to 3, which fix most beta drain. If battery life is still poor after a few days, check battery health, then report the problem and decide whether to stay on the beta.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the iOS 27 beta drain my battery so fast?
Several things stack up. After every beta install, your iPhone re-indexes Photos and Spotlight and re-syncs iCloud data. Beta builds also carry extra diagnostic logging and code that Apple has not finished tuning, and on Apple Intelligence models, on-device models may download in the background. The indexing part fades after a few days; the rest usually improves as later builds arrive.
How long does battery drain last after a beta update?
The heaviest drain usually lasts two to three days after an install, while background indexing and syncing finish. Keep the iPhone on charge and on Wi-Fi overnight during that time and judge battery life afterwards. If drain is still bad after about four days, look at Settings › Battery for an app with unusual background activity, then report the problem in Feedback Assistant.
Should I use Low Power Mode on the iOS 27 beta?
Yes, when you need the battery to last. Low Power Mode reduces background activity, trims some visual effects and limits performance until you charge again. Turn it on in Settings › Battery › Low Power Mode or from Control Center. It can mask the behaviour you are trying to test, so switch it off when you are actively trying out new features.
Does Liquid Glass affect battery life?
The translucent Liquid Glass design relies on blur and animation, which adds graphics work. If you want to cut that work, turn on Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Reduce Transparency and Settings › Accessibility › Motion › Reduce Motion. Surfaces become more solid and zoom animations become fades. Undo either setting at any time.
Does Reset All Settings fix beta battery drain?
It can, if a corrupted preference is behind the drain. Go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. It does not delete photos, apps or data, but it resets Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, display and privacy settings, so you will need to set those up again. Try it only after the simpler tips.
Will battery life be better if I leave the beta?
Often, yes, because public releases have had more tuning. You have two options. Turn off Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates and wait for the next public release with a higher version number, which keeps your data. Or restore iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82), which Apple is signing now, from a Mac or PC; that erases the iPhone, and you then restore a pre-beta backup.
