How to install the watchOS 27 beta on Apple Watch, and what's new

Install the watchOS 27 beta from the Watch app on your iPhone, step by step. Why you cannot downgrade an Apple Watch, what you need first and how to fix it.

Quick answer

To install the watchOS 27 beta, put the matching iOS 27 beta on your paired iPhone, then open the Watch app and go to General › Software Update › Beta Updates. Choose the public or developer beta, place the watch on its charger with at least 50% battery and tap Download and Install. You cannot downgrade an Apple Watch, so use a watch you can spare.

Where the watchOS 27 beta stands today

watchOS 27 is out of its first beta cycle. Apple announced it alongside iOS 27 at WWDC on 8 June 2026, and the current public release is watchOS 27.0.1 (build 24R365), released on 28 September 2026. The beta track has moved on to watchOS 27.2.

If you simply want watchOS 27 on your watch, you no longer need the beta. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to General › Software Update and install watchOS 27.0.1. The rest of this guide is for people who want the 27.2 betas before they reach everyone.

Read this first: you cannot downgrade an Apple Watch

An Apple Watch cannot be rolled back to an older watchOS by its owner. An iPhone can be connected to a Mac or PC and restored from recovery mode; the watch has no recovery mode you can use. Once a beta is installed, you live with it until a newer build arrives.

That leaves you with three realistic options if a beta causes problems:

  • wait for the next beta and hope it fixes the issue
  • turn off Beta Updates and wait for the next public release with a higher version number
  • contact Apple Support if the watch stops working altogether

Turning off Beta Updates does not remove the beta. It keeps the build you have and moves the watch to the next public release that has a higher version number than your beta. If you are on watchOS 27.2 beta 4, that means waiting for the final watchOS 27.2.

Who should install it

  • Developers testing watch apps or complications against the new release.
  • Anyone with a spare Apple Watch they do not depend on day to day.
  • People who understand the risks and do not rely on the watch for health monitoring.

Who should wait

  • Anyone with only one Apple Watch.
  • People who rely on heart rate alerts, ECG or fall detection.
  • Anyone who would be badly inconvenienced by battery drain, crashes or missed notifications.

Our beta risk matrix compares the risk across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch if you are still deciding.

What you need before you start

A watchOS beta depends on the iPhone it is paired with, so check each item before you begin.

RequirementWhy it matters
Paired iPhone on the matching iOS 27 betaThe watchOS beta only appears when the iPhone runs the matching iOS beta
Apple Account enrolled in the betaPublic beta at beta.apple.com; developer beta through the free Apple Developer app sign-in
A watch model that runs watchOS 27Unsupported watches never see the update
At least 50% battery, on the chargerThe install will not start, or may stall, otherwise
iPhone on Wi-Fi and close to the watchThe update is downloaded by the iPhone and transferred to the watch

Apple publishes the list of compatible Apple Watch models on its watchOS page. The simplest check is the Watch app itself: if watchOS 27.0.1 is offered under General › Software Update, your watch supports watchOS 27.

How to install the watchOS 27 beta

Do these steps in order. The first one happens on the iPhone; everything after that is in the Watch app.

Step 1: put the iOS 27 beta on your iPhone

  1. Make an archived backup of the iPhone on a Mac or PC. A backup made on a beta cannot be restored to an older iOS version.
  2. On the iPhone, open Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates.
  3. Choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta.
  4. Go back and install the beta.
  5. Confirm the version under Settings › General › About.

Our guide to installing the iOS 27 beta on iPhone covers enrolment and the difference between the two tracks in detail.

Step 2: turn on watchOS beta updates

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone with the watch nearby and connected.
  2. Tap General › Software Update and wait for the check to finish.
  3. Tap Beta Updates.
  4. Select watchOS 27 Public Beta, or watchOS 27 Developer Beta if you signed in with a developer account.
  5. Tap Back. The watchOS 27 beta should now appear on the Software Update screen.

Step 3: install it

  1. Put the Apple Watch on its charger and make sure it has at least 50% battery.
  2. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and next to the watch.
  3. Tap Download and Install.
  4. Enter your iPhone passcode, then your Apple Watch passcode if asked.
  5. Leave the watch on the charger until it finishes. It restarts more than once, which is normal.

The whole process usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and can take longer. Starting it before bed and leaving it overnight avoids the temptation to take the watch off the charger halfway through.

What's new in watchOS 27

Before WWDC, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that watchOS 27 would focus on stability, performance and smaller refinements rather than large new features. The items reported at the time were:

  • Improved heart rate tracking, expected to work on existing Apple Watch hardware.
  • New watch faces, including a simplified take on the Modular Ultra face.
  • More Apple Intelligence, with the heavy processing done on the paired iPhone.
  • General stability and performance work, in line with the refinement focus across the 27-series releases.

These were pre-launch reports, not Apple's announcement. For what Apple confirmed across the 27 releases, see the iOS 27 features list and Apple's own watchOS page. On watchOS 26, Apple Intelligence features such as Workout Buddy, Live Translation in Messages and notification summaries already required a paired iPhone with Apple Intelligence, which means iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Troubleshooting the watchOS 27 beta

The beta update does not appear

  • Check that the iPhone runs the matching iOS beta, not the public iOS 27.0.1.
  • Confirm your Apple Account is enrolled at beta.apple.com.
  • Sign out of your Apple Account on the iPhone and sign back in.
  • Restart the iPhone and the Apple Watch.
  • Make sure your watch model is on Apple's watchOS 27 list.

Many of the same causes apply to the iPhone side. Our fix for the iOS 27 beta not showing up in Settings goes through them one by one.

The download is stuck or fails

  • Move the iPhone and watch closer together.
  • Check that the iPhone has a strong Wi-Fi connection.
  • Close and reopen the Watch app, then try again.
  • Try again later; download servers are busiest right after a new beta goes out.

The install is stuck on the progress wheel

  • Wait at least 60 minutes before doing anything.
  • Keep the watch on its charger.
  • If it is truly frozen, force restart it by holding the side button and the Digital Crown together for about 10 seconds.

The watch will not turn on after the update

  • Leave it on the charger for at least 30 minutes.
  • Force restart it with the side button and Digital Crown held for about 10 seconds.
  • If it still does not respond, contact Apple Support.

How to report watchOS beta bugs

Bugs you hit on the beta are worth reporting, because the fix may arrive in the next build. Use the Feedback Assistant app, which is installed automatically with Apple beta software, and describe what the watch was doing when the problem happened. Our guide to reporting bugs in the iOS 27 beta explains what to include so Apple can reproduce the problem.

What to do next

If your iPhone is not on the beta yet, that is the place to start: follow the iOS 27 beta install guide, then come back to the Watch app. If you are on the fence about which track to pick, the developer beta vs public beta comparison explains the trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the watchOS 27 beta?

Put the matching iOS 27 beta on your paired iPhone first. Then open the Watch app on the iPhone, go to General › Software Update › Beta Updates, pick watchOS 27 Public Beta or Developer Beta, and go back. Put the watch on its charger with at least 50% battery, keep the iPhone nearby on Wi-Fi, and tap Download and Install. Expect it to take 30 to 60 minutes.

Can I downgrade from the watchOS 27 beta?

No. Apple Watch has no recovery mode you can use yourself, so you cannot restore an older watchOS the way you can on an iPhone with a Mac or PC. If you turn off Beta Updates, the watch stays on its current beta and moves to the next public watchOS release with a higher version number. Install the beta only on a watch you can live with if something goes wrong.

What is the latest watchOS 27 beta?

The latest watchOS beta is watchOS 27.2 beta 4, build 24S5112a, released on 13 October 2026. The latest public release is watchOS 27.0.1, build 24R365, released on 28 September 2026. If you only want the stable version, you do not need the beta at all: install watchOS 27.0.1 from General › Software Update in the Watch app.

Do I need the iOS 27 beta to install the watchOS 27 beta?

Yes. A watchOS beta is offered only when the paired iPhone runs the matching iOS beta, so for watchOS 27.2 beta you need iOS 27.2 beta on the iPhone. If the iPhone is on the public iOS 27.0.1 release, the watchOS beta option will not appear. Install the iOS beta first, check it under Settings › General › About, then return to the Watch app.

Is it safe to put the watchOS beta on my only Apple Watch?

It is not recommended. Beta builds can bring battery drain, crashes and less reliable health readings, and there is no downgrade path. If you rely on the watch for heart rate alerts, ECG, fall detection or daily notifications, stay on the public release. A spare watch, or a developer who needs to test a watch app, is the right fit for the beta.

Why is the watchOS 27 beta not showing up?

The usual causes are an iPhone that is not on the matching iOS beta, an Apple Account that is not enrolled at beta.apple.com, a watch below 50% battery or off its charger, or a watch model that watchOS 27 does not support. Restart both devices, sign out of your Apple Account and back in on the iPhone, then check General › Software Update › Beta Updates in the Watch app again.
