iOS 27: Everything We Know About the Release, Devices and Features

iOS 27 is out: announced 8 June, released 14 September, now at 27.0.1 with the 27.2 beta in testing. Every build, supported device and pre-launch report.

Quick answer

iOS 27 is out. Apple announced it at WWDC on 8 June 2026, released iOS 27.0 on 14 September and iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September. It runs on the iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). The current beta is iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a), and Apple Intelligence still needs an A17 Pro chip or newer.

Where iOS 27 stands today

This page started in February as a roundup of rumours. Since then iOS 27 has been announced, tested for three months and shipped. Here is the state of play on 19 October 2026:

The beta track has skipped straight from 27.0 to 27.2 for iPhone. If you want to test what comes next, the 27.2 beta is the build to install. If you just want iOS 27, the public 27.0.1 release is the one to have.

Which devices run iOS 27?

iOS 27 runs on 33 iPhones: the iPhone 11 and every later model, plus the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). That is exactly the set of iPhones that ran iOS 26. The newest additions are the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the list also includes the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. The iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and older are not supported.

Apple Intelligence has a stricter rule. On iPhone it needs an A17 Pro chip or newer, which means the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and every iPhone 16, 17 and 18 model, including the iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus run iOS 27 without it.

What was reported before WWDC

In the months before the June keynote, this page collected what credible outlets, mostly Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, said Apple was planning. It is kept here as a record. These were reports, not announcements, and this page does not claim any of them shipped. For the features Apple lists for iOS 27, use our iOS 27 features list.

A "Snow Leopard" year

The most repeated theme was stability. Gurman described iOS 27 as a release in the spirit of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the 2009 update known for performance work rather than new features. The reported priorities were bug fixes left over from the iOS 26 Liquid Glass redesign, memory management, faster app launches and better battery life on older iPhones. He expected WWDC 2026 to be "a fairly muted affair" by recent standards.

Liquid Glass refinements

Reports said Apple would refine Liquid Glass rather than replace it, with Gurman describing "some tweaks to the interface". One rumour that kept coming back was a systemwide slider to adjust how strong the glass effect looks. The reporting tied the changes to a design leadership shift: Alan Dye, who led Apple's interface design, was reported to have left for Meta in December 2025, with long-time Apple designer Steve Lemay taking a bigger role. Our page on the iOS 27 Liquid Glass slider covers that rumour in detail.

A chatbot-style Siri

The biggest reported change was a Siri rebuilt for back-and-forth conversation, with a chat-style interface and web answers under a project reportedly called "World Knowledge Answers". Reports also said Google's Gemini models would power parts of Apple Intelligence, and that the personal Siri features first shown at WWDC 2024 would finally arrive. The long story of those delays is in our Siri delay breakdown.

Software for a foldable iPhone

Gurman reported in 2025 that iOS 27 would include features built for Apple's first foldable iPhone, and that Apple would likely keep them hidden until the hardware launch. As of today, no foldable model appears in Apple's list of iPhones that run iOS 27.

Battery, Health and satellite

  • Charge limits. An automation to cap charging at a set level was reported.
  • Health. Reports said a planned paid "Health+" coaching service had been dropped, with some AI health recommendations and explainer videos moving into the free Health app instead.
  • Satellite. Reported additions included Maps over satellite, sending photos by satellite, satellite access for third-party apps, and 5G satellite connectivity limited to iPhone 18 Pro models.

How to get iOS 27 or the beta

To get the public release, open Settings › General › Software Update on a supported iPhone and install iOS 27.0.1. To test the next version, enroll in the beta and switch on the beta channel:

  1. Make an archived computer backup. A backup made on a beta cannot be restored onto an older iOS version.
  2. Enroll at beta.apple.com for the public beta, or sign in once in the free Apple Developer app for the developer beta.
  3. Go to Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates.
  4. Choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta.
  5. Go back and install the iOS 27.2 beta.

To leave later, set Beta Updates to Off. You keep your current build, and the iPhone moves to the next public release with a higher version number. To go back to iOS 26, Apple is currently signing iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones; restore it from a Mac or PC, then restore your pre-beta backup.

Frequently asked questions

When was iOS 27 released?

Apple announced iOS 27 at the WWDC 2026 keynote on 8 June 2026 and shipped the first developer beta the same day. The public release, iOS 27.0 (build 24A437), arrived on 14 September 2026. iOS 27.0.1 (24A446) followed on 28 September 2026 and is the current public version. The iOS 27.2 beta is in testing now.

Which iPhones can run iOS 27?

iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). That is 33 models, from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and it is the same list of iPhones that ran iOS 26. The iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and older do not get iOS 27. Apple Intelligence needs an A17 Pro chip or newer, so not every supported iPhone gets those features.

What is the latest iOS 27 beta?

iOS 27.2 beta 4, build 24B5110a, released on 13 October 2026. It follows 27.2 beta 1 on 16 September, beta 2 on 21 September and beta 3 on 5 October. You can install it free with any Apple Account through Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates. No paid developer membership or configuration profile is needed.

Did the iPhone 11 lose support in iOS 27?

No. Several pre-launch compatibility leaks said iOS 27 would drop the iPhone 11 series and the iPhone SE (2nd generation). They were wrong. Apple kept every iPhone that ran iOS 26, so the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max and SE (2nd generation) all run iOS 27. The cutoff is unchanged: iPhone XS, XS Max and XR stay on older software.

Is iOS 27 a Snow Leopard-style update?

That was how Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described Apple's plans before WWDC: a release focused on bug fixes, performance and battery life after two years of big changes. This page records that reporting but does not grade it. For what Apple actually lists for iOS 27, see our full features list, and our known bugs page for how the builds behave in practice.

Can I go back to iOS 26 after installing iOS 27?

Yes, while Apple signs it. Today Apple is signing iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones. You restore it from a Mac or PC with Finder or the Apple Devices app, which erases the iPhone, and then restore a backup made on iOS 26. A backup made on iOS 27 cannot be restored onto iOS 26.
