iOS 27 Beta

iOS 27 Beta on iPhone 12: Is It Worth Installing on Your Phone?

Every iPhone 12 model runs iOS 27 and the 27.2 beta, but without Apple Intelligence. What you get, how the beta behaves, and when to stay on iOS 27.0.1.

Quick answer

Yes, every iPhone 12 model runs iOS 27 and can install the current beta, iOS 27.2 beta 4 (build 24B5110a). It does not get Apple Intelligence, which needs an A17 Pro chip or newer. For a phone you depend on every day, the public iOS 27.0.1 release is the better choice. Install the beta only on a spare iPhone 12 or if you accept bugs.

Which iPhone 12 models run iOS 27?

All four do: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple kept every iPhone that ran iOS 26, so the full iOS 27 list starts at the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). Only the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and older miss out.

That corrects a claim this page once carried. Before WWDC, some compatibility leaks said the iPhone 11 would be dropped and the iPhone 12 would become the oldest supported model. That did not happen. The iPhone 12 sits in the middle of the support window rather than at the bottom of it. To confirm your exact model, look in Settings › General › About.

Where the iOS 27 beta stands today

The beta is no longer a preview of iOS 27 itself. iOS 27.0 shipped to the public on 14 September 2026 (build 24A437), and iOS 27.0.1 followed on 28 September (24A446). The beta track has moved on to iOS 27.2, with four builds so far:

BuildVersionReleased
24B5084kiOS 27.2 beta16 September 2026
24B5089giOS 27.2 beta 221 September 2026
24B5099fiOS 27.2 beta 35 October 2026
24B5110aiOS 27.2 beta 413 October 2026

So the real choice for an iPhone 12 owner is between the finished iOS 27.0.1 and the in-progress 27.2 beta. If your iPhone 12 is still on iOS 26, updating normally gets you iOS 27 without any beta risk.

What the iPhone 12 gets and what it misses

The iPhone 12 gets the core iOS 27 release. The one category it misses entirely is Apple Intelligence, because the A14 Bionic is below the A17 Pro cutoff.

Before launch, many reports described a rebuilt Siri and a long list of other features, some of them said to work on every supported iPhone. This page does not repeat those claims as fact. For what Apple actually lists for iOS 27, see our full iOS 27 features list, and check whether a feature carries the Apple Intelligence label before assuming it reaches the iPhone 12.

How the beta behaves on older hardware

Any beta asks more of older hardware than a public build does. There are three things to watch on an iPhone 12.

  • The first day or two. After a major install, iOS re-indexes Photos and Spotlight and re-syncs iCloud data. The phone can run warm and the battery can fall faster than usual. Judge it after a few days, not a few hours.
  • Memory. The iPhone 12 and 12 mini have 4 GB of RAM, against 6 GB in the Pro models. With less memory, apps you switch away from are more likely to reload when you come back to them.
  • Battery. The standard iPhone 12 has a 2,815 mAh battery, and most iPhone 12s in use today are several years old. Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging before you install. A worn battery makes any extra drain far more noticeable.

Both the standard and Pro models use 60Hz displays, and the Pro models add a LiDAR scanner. Neither difference changes which iOS 27 features you get.

Should you install the beta or stay on iOS 27.0.1?

Decide by how much you rely on the phone, not by how stable the latest build looks.

The public beta and developer beta are both free. The developer beta gets each build first; the public beta is aimed at everyday testers.

How to install the iOS 27 beta on an iPhone 12

You need a free Apple Account enrolled in the beta and no configuration profile. Back up first.

  1. Make an encrypted computer backup and archive it, as described in our backup and restore guide.
  2. Enroll at beta.apple.com for the public beta, or sign in once in the free Apple Developer app for the developer beta.
  3. Plug the iPhone into a charger and join Wi-Fi.
  4. Open Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates.
  5. Choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta.
  6. Go back to Software Update and install the beta that appears.

If you prefer a computer install, the IPSW files are on each model's page: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Each page shows which builds Apple is still signing.

How to leave the beta

There are two ways out, and only one keeps your data without a restore.

  • Turn off Beta Updates. In Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates, choose Off. You keep your current build and your data, and the iPhone moves to the next public release with a higher version number.
  • Restore iOS 26. Apple is signing iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones. Restoring it from a Mac or PC erases the phone, and you then restore the backup you made before the beta. Our guide to downgrading to iOS 26 has the steps.

Tips for running iOS 27 on an iPhone 12

  • Keep storage free. Leave several gigabytes spare in Settings › General › iPhone Storage. Updates and caches need room, and a full phone slows down.
  • Trim background work. In Settings › General › Background App Refresh, turn it off for apps that do not need fresh content all the time.
  • Check location access. In Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, move apps from Always to While Using where you can.
  • Simplify motion if animations stutter. Settings › Accessibility › Motion › Reduce Motion swaps some effects for simpler fades.
  • Restart now and then. A restart clears stuck background processes, which build up faster on beta software.
  • Report bugs. Use the Feedback Assistant app on the iPhone, so Apple sees problems on A14 hardware.

Is iOS 27 the iPhone 12's last major update?

Nobody outside Apple knows. The iPhone 12 launched in October 2020 with iOS 14, and iOS 27 is its latest major version. Earlier models give a rough sense of the pattern: the iPhone 6s ran iOS 9 through iOS 15, the iPhone 7 ran iOS 10 through iOS 15, and the iPhone 8 and iPhone X ran iOS 11 through iOS 16. The iPhone XS and XR stop before iOS 26, while the older iPhone 11 is still supported today.

Losing major updates does not stop a phone working. Our guide to what happens when Apple stops supporting an iPhone explains what changes and what does not.

What to do next

If you have decided to try it, work through how to prepare your iPhone for the iOS 27 beta first, then install. If you would rather wait, update to iOS 27.0.1 in Settings › General › Software Update with Beta Updates set to Off.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone 12 get iOS 27?

Yes. iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max all run iOS 27. iOS 27.0 shipped on 14 September 2026, and the current public release is iOS 27.0.1 (24A446). The iPhone 12 is not the oldest supported model: the iPhone 11 series and iPhone SE (2nd generation) also run iOS 27.

Is the iOS 27 beta worth installing on an iPhone 12?

Only if the phone is a spare or you are comfortable with bugs. iOS 27 is already out as a public release, so the beta now means the iOS 27.2 test builds rather than early access to iOS 27 itself. If the iPhone 12 is your only phone and you rely on banking, work or authenticator apps, staying on iOS 27.0.1 is the safer choice.

Does the iPhone 12 support Apple Intelligence?

No. Apple Intelligence on iPhone needs an A17 Pro chip or newer, and the iPhone 12 uses the A14 Bionic. That rules out Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji, notification summaries and Clean Up in Photos. The cheapest route to Apple Intelligence is an iPhone 15 Pro or later; the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not qualify.

Will iOS 27 make my iPhone 12 slower?

Expect the first day or two after any big update to feel slower and warmer while iOS re-indexes Photos and Spotlight in the background. After that, judge it on daily use. Beta builds can carry extra logging and unfinished code, so they are a poor guide to how a public release performs. If speed matters most, run the public iOS 27.0.1 build rather than the beta.

Will the iPhone 12 get iOS 28?

Apple has not said. It announces supported devices for each major version at WWDC, so nobody knows the iOS 28 list yet. When Apple does stop major updates for a model, that iPhone keeps working, and Apple has a history of shipping security fixes for older versions for a while afterwards. Our guide to what happens when an iPhone loses support explains the details.

Can I go back to iOS 26 from the beta on an iPhone 12?

Yes, while Apple keeps signing it. Today Apple signs iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones. You restore it from a Mac or PC with the IPSW for your exact model, which erases the iPhone, and then restore a backup made before you installed the beta. Backups made on iOS 27 cannot be restored onto iOS 26.
