How to install an IPSW on the Mac (Apple silicon)

  1. Back up with Time Machine. A restore erases the Mac's internal disk.
  2. Download the UniversalMac file above — one restore image covers every Apple silicon Mac.
  3. Use a second Mac with Apple Configurator installed, connected with a USB-C cable to the DFU port of the Mac you are restoring.
  4. Start the Mac in DFU mode, drag the .ipsw onto it in Apple Configurator, and choose Restore.
  5. Don't need a full restore? Installing the beta over the air from System Settings → General → Software Update is simpler.
