Quick answer
Most iOS 27 beta install problems come down to a few causes: Beta Updates switched off or set to the wrong Apple Account, too little free storage, a damaged download, or a build Apple no longer signs. Check those first, delete the downloaded update and retry on Wi-Fi with the phone charging. If the iPhone will not start, reinstall from recovery mode with Finder or Apple Devices.
Check these before anything else
Many "errors" are really setup problems. Confirm four things:
- Your iPhone runs iOS 27. That means the iPhone 11 or later, or the iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation). The iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and older cannot install it. See the iOS 27 supported devices list.
- You are enrolled with the right Apple Account. Betas are free with any Apple Account. For the developer beta, sign in once in the Apple Developer app. For the public beta, enroll at beta.apple.com. The account must match the one signed in on the phone.
- Beta Updates is set. Open
Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updatesand choose iOS 27 Public Beta or iOS 27 Developer Beta. No configuration profile is needed; profiles were retired in 2023. - You know what to expect. The current beta is iOS 27.2 beta 4 (24B5110a), released 13 October 2026. The current public release is iOS 27.0.1 (24A446).
Quick diagnosis: symptom, cause and fix
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| No iOS 27 beta in Software Update | Beta Updates off, wrong account, or device not supported | Set Beta Updates and check the Apple Account |
| "Unable to check for update" | No connection to Apple's update servers | Change network, wait a few minutes, retry |
| Not enough storage | Too little free space for download and install | Clear space in iPhone Storage |
| "Unable to verify update" | Download incomplete or damaged | Delete the update and download it again |
| "Unable to install update" | Damaged download, low space or a temporary fault | Delete the update, restart, retry on power |
| Stuck on the Apple logo or progress bar | Install interrupted or still running | Wait, then force restart, then recovery mode |
| Error 3194 on a computer | Build not signed, or Apple's servers blocked | Check signing status, then security software |
| Errors 4005 or 4013 on a computer | Connection to the computer dropped | Another cable and port, update the computer |
The iOS 27 beta does not show up
If Software Update says you are up to date, the phone does not know you want the beta. Work through these in order:
- Open
Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updatesand pick the iOS 27 track. If it shows Off, that is the cause. - Check that the Apple Account listed at the bottom of the Beta Updates screen is the one you enrolled. If not, tap it and change it.
- Go back to Software Update and give it a minute to check.
- Restart the iPhone and look again.
- If the phone is managed by a school or company, look in
Settings › General › VPN & Device Management. A management profile can block beta updates.
Our dedicated guide to fixing the iOS 27 beta not showing up covers the rarer cases.
"Unable to check for update"
The phone cannot reach Apple's update servers. It is common in the first hours after a new build when many people check at once, and on networks that block large downloads, such as some hotel and office Wi-Fi.
- Switch to a different Wi-Fi network you trust, or turn off any VPN.
- Wait a few minutes and check again.
- If other sites also fail, reset the connection with
Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings but not your data.
Not enough storage
The beta needs room for the download and extra working space while it installs. If iOS says there is not enough space, or the install fails partway, free up more than the bare minimum.
- Open
Settings › General › iPhone Storageto see what takes the most room. - Offload apps you rarely use. Their documents stay on the phone.
- Move photos and videos to iCloud Photos or a computer, then delete the local copies.
- Delete old message attachments and downloaded media in streaming apps.
For how much space to aim for, see how much storage the iOS 27 beta needs.
"Unable to verify update" or "Unable to install update"
These usually mean the downloaded file is incomplete or damaged. Start fresh:
- Open
Settings › General › iPhone Storage. - Find the iOS update in the app list and tap it.
- Tap Delete Update and confirm.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, plug in the charger and download the beta again from
Settings › General › Software Update.
If the over-the-air install keeps failing, install the same build from a computer instead. Each IPSW on our IPSW download page links straight to Apple's servers.
Stuck on the Apple logo or the progress bar
Give it time first. A beta install restarts the phone several times, and some steps show the same screen for a while. If the phone is warm, it is probably still working. If nothing has changed for a long time and the phone is cool, move on.
Force restart
Every iPhone that runs iOS 27 uses the same button sequence:
- Press and release Volume Up.
- Press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, then let go.
A force restart does not erase anything.
Recovery mode
If the phone still will not start, reinstall iOS from a computer:
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac with Finder or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app.
- Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the side button. Keep holding past the Apple logo until the recovery mode screen appears.
- On the computer, choose Update first. It reinstalls iOS and tries to keep your data.
- If Update fails, repeat the steps and choose Restore. This erases the phone, after which you restore a backup.
DFU mode is the last step after recovery mode. It always erases the phone. The full walkthrough is in our guide to an iPhone stuck on the Apple logo after an iOS 27 update.
Error codes when installing with a computer
Finder and the Apple Devices app show numbered errors when an IPSW update or restore fails. The ones people hit most often during beta season:
Error 3194
The computer could not get Apple's approval for that build. Every installation needs Apple's signature for that version on that device. If Apple has stopped signing the build, it cannot be installed and there is no workaround. Check the signing badge on your device's IPSW page. If the build is signed, security software or a modified hosts file on the computer may be blocking Apple's servers: disable it temporarily and try again.
Errors 4005 and 4013
The connection between the iPhone and the computer dropped during the restore. Use a different cable, plug into a USB port on the computer itself rather than a hub, update macOS or the Apple Devices app, restart both devices and try again.
Error 4000
Usually a communication problem during the update. Make sure the computer is up to date and online, then repeat the restore from recovery mode.
Errors 9 and 21
These can come from a loose connection or a temporary fault, so try the same cable and port fixes first. If they keep coming back on different cables and computers, they can point to a hardware problem. At that point, contact Apple Support.
The device does not appear in Finder or Apple Devices
Enter the passcode on the iPhone and tap Trust when asked. Try another cable and port. On Windows, make sure the Apple Devices app is up to date.
If nothing works: go back to iOS 26
If the beta will not install or will not run reliably, you can return to the public release. Apple is currently signing iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones. Restore it with Finder or Apple Devices, which erases the phone, then restore the backup you made before trying the beta. A backup made on iOS 27 cannot be restored onto iOS 26. Our guide to downgrading from the iOS 27 beta to iOS 26 takes you through it.
How to avoid installation errors next time
- Make a computer backup and archive it before installing any beta.
- Install on Wi-Fi with the iPhone plugged in.
- Leave generous free storage, not the minimum.
- Update your apps first and restart the phone before you start.
- For computer installs, use a cable you trust and a port on the computer itself.
- Do not unplug or force restart while the progress bar is still moving.
The complete checklist is in our guide on how to prepare your iPhone for the iOS 27 beta.
What to do next
Once the beta is installed, report anything that breaks through the Feedback app so Apple sees it. If you have not started yet, follow our iOS 27 beta download guide step by step, which avoids most of the problems on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't the iOS 27 beta install on my iPhone?
The usual causes are, in order: Beta Updates is set to Off or to the wrong track, the Apple Account on the phone is not the one you enrolled, there is not enough free storage, or the download was damaged. Check Settings › General › Software Update › Beta Updates, free up space, delete the downloaded update in Settings › General › iPhone Storage, restart and try again on Wi-Fi with the phone charging.
What does error 3194 mean when installing iOS 27?
Error 3194 appears when Finder or the Apple Devices app cannot get Apple's approval for the build you are installing. Most often the build is no longer signed, so it cannot be installed at all. Less often, security software or a modified hosts file on the computer blocks Apple's servers. Check the signing status on your device's IPSW page and, if it is signed, try again with that software disabled.
Is it safe to restart an iPhone that seems stuck while installing?
Wait first. A beta install restarts the phone several times and can sit on the Apple logo or a progress bar for a while. If nothing has changed for a long time and the phone is cool, a force restart is reasonable: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. If it still will not start, use recovery mode with a computer.
What is the difference between recovery mode and DFU mode?
Recovery mode lets Finder or Apple Devices reinstall iOS. It offers Update, which tries to keep your data, and Restore, which erases the phone. DFU mode is a lower-level state used when recovery mode does not work, and a DFU restore always erases the device. Try recovery mode and Update first, then Restore, and only then DFU.
Will a failed iOS 27 beta installation delete my data?
Usually not. A failed over-the-air install normally leaves the phone on its previous version with your data intact, and Update in recovery mode tries to keep everything. Data is erased when you choose Restore, use DFU mode or downgrade. That is why an archived computer backup made before the beta matters: it is the copy you can restore onto iOS 26 if you need to start again.
Can I go back to iOS 26 if the beta keeps failing?
Yes, while Apple signs the older build. Apple is currently signing iOS 26.6.1 RC (23G82) for iPhones. Restore it with Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows, which erases the phone, then restore a backup made before you tried the beta. A backup made on iOS 27 cannot be restored onto iOS 26.
Will Apple Support help with iOS 27 beta errors?
Apple Support can help with hardware problems and walk you through recovery, but beta software is not covered like a public release. Report beta bugs with the Feedback app that comes with the beta, or at feedbackassistant.apple.com, and include what you were doing when the error appeared. If errors continue across cables and computers, book a hardware check.
